As we mentioned in last month’s streaming guide, while the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes continue, we’re continuing to recommend monthly streaming picks in order to help emphasize the value of writers’ and actors’ work. And September certainly has some great content coming your way, including the premiere of The Super Models, the at-home premiere of The Little Mermaid, the first season of Gen V, the final season of Sex Education and CBC’s newest docuseries Telling Our Story. We hope this guide can be a to-do list for supporting both unions. Read on for the full list of what we’re recommending on Apple TV+, CBC Gem, Crave, Disney+, Hayu, Netflix Canada and Prime Video in September 2023.

The Changeling (Premieres September 8)

This horror fantasy series will be an adaptation of a novel of the same by Victor LaValle. This series takes place in an alternate New York City. Apollo Kagwa and his wife Emma are new parents with their infant child. But Emma has been experiencing terrible post-partum depression. As they adjust to their new lives as parents, however, Emma's struggles show signs of going further than just post-partum. Apollo's wife mysteriously goes missing, and their son gets abducted. Now, he must traverse through a magical world to find them.

The Morning Show, Season 3 (Premieres September 13)

An unapologetically candid drama that looks at the modern workplace through the lens of the people who help wake America up, pulling back the curtain on early morning TV.

The Super Models (Premieres September 20)

The Super Models is an upcoming fashion documentary miniseries consisting of four episodes. The series follows the rise of Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, and Christy Turlington during the 80s and 90s. The quartet disrupted and reimagined the fashion scene during their time, and the mini docuseries will show us their formidable careers along with interviews with the four women.

Still Up (Premieres September 22)

Lisa is an impulsive and free-spirited aspiring writer whose questions over her daughter's future start keeping her up at night, and the socially anxious yet gifted journalist Danny. The pair have no secrets, except their feelings for each other, and while the world sleeps, they spend their long nights talking despite never meeting.

Cook Clever (Premieres September 6)

Culinary legend and queen of leftovers Prue Leith teams up with food expert Dr. Rupy Aujla to help families tackle food waste and save money.

The Kid Detective (Premieres September 8)

A once-celebrated kid detective (Adam Brody, The O.C.), now 32, solves the same trivial mysteries between hangovers and bouts of self-pity, until a naive client brings him his first 'adult' case: to find out who brutally murdered her boyfriend.

The Passionate Eye: Twice Colonized (Premieres September 13)

Renowned Inuit lawyer Aaju Peter has spent her life fighting for the rights of her people. When her son suddenly dies, she embarks on a journey to reclaim her language and culture after a lifetime of whitewashing and forced assimilation..

Crime Scene Kitchen (Premieres September 14)

Each episode of this cooking competition, hosted by Joel McHale, begins at the scene of the crime -- a kitchen that was just used to make an amazing, mouthwatering dessert that has since disappeared. The chef teams of two are challenged to scour the kitchen for clues and ingredients to figure out what was baked. Next, each team must duplicate the recipe based on their guess for celebrity judges chef Curtis Stone and cake artist Yolanda Gampp.

Telling Our Story (Premieres September 17)

The 11 First Peoples in Quebec, Canada—Abenaki, Anishnabe, Atikamekw, Cree of Eeyou Istchee, Innu, Inuit, Mi'gmaq, Kanyen'kehà:ka (Mohawk), Naskapi, Wendat, and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet)—are telling us who they are, in their own way and from their point of view: their worldview, their connection to the Territory, their spirituality, their values, their history going back thousands of years, their wounds, their struggles, their victories, and their hopes. Their stories give depth to our great collective narrative, decolonize history and minds, and honour the Ancestors and Mother Earth.

Bones of Crows (Premieres September 20)

Bones of Crows is a five-part hour-long drama told through the eyes of Cree Matriarch, Aline Spears (played throughout her life by Summer Testawich; Grace Dove, Monkey Beach; and Carla Rae, Rutherford Falls), as she survives Canada’s residential school system to continue her family’s generational fight in the face of systemic starvation, racism, and sexual abuse. The series is an expanded story from the feature film version; a truly epic tale that spans over a hundred years and multiple generations of the Spears family, the series connects and deepens the events of the past with a cumulative force that propels us into the future with power.

Legacy Awards (Premieres September 24)

The second edition of The Legacy Awards from The Black Academy, hosted by Keshia Chanté, will feature live performances, award presentations and tributes honouring established and emerging Black Canadian talent.

Still Standing, Season 9 (Premieres September 26)

Still Standing follows Canadian comedian Jonny Harris (Murdoch Mysteries) as he sets off across the country, veering off the main highway to discover the hidden comedy in Canada's far-flung small towns. Each week, Jonny takes a hilarious and heart-warming journey to find humour in the unlikeliest of places -- small towns on the ropes. After immersing himself in the lives of local characters and unearthing the tall tales in these tiny towns, Jonny delivers a rousing original stand-up comedy routine -- a toast, not a roast -- for the whole community.

The Pope’s Exorcist (Premieres September 1)

Inspired by the actual files of Father Gabriele Amorth, Chief Exorcist of the Vatican (Academy Award®-winner Russell Crowe), The Pope’s Exorcist follows Amorth as he investigates a young boy’s terrifying possession, and ends up uncovering a centuries-old conspiracy the Vatican has desperately tried to keep hidden.

Power Book IV: Force, Season 2 (Premieres September 1)

Nothing stands in Tommy Egan’s way this season as he makes his play at becoming the sole drug distributor in Chicago. Alliances form and competitors become targets as a turf war heats up, and Tommy must race to stay one step ahead of everyone. Meanwhile, a federal task force is zeroed in on him and he has an eye on a special someone, forcing him to decide what he is willing to sacrifice to claim Chicago as his.

The Winter King (Premieres September 10)

The Winter King is a bold and revisionist take on the well-loved Arthurian legends and follows Arthur Pendragon as he evolves from outcast to legendary warrior and leader. The series is set in the 5th century long before Britain was united, and in a land of warring factions and tribes when the world was brutal, and lives were often fleeting.

Revival69: The Concert that Rocked the World (Premieres September 13)

Young, scrappy concert promoter John Brower puts his life on the line to turn his failing Toronto Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival into a one-day event, later coined in rock mythology as “the second most important event in rock ‘n’ roll history.” Through conversations with iconic musicians including Alice Cooper, Robbie Krieger (The Doors), Alan White (Yes), Geddy Lee (Rush), Danny Seraphine (Chicago), and Klaus Voorman (Manfred Mann, The Beatles), along with never-before-seen original performance and behind-the-scenes footage, the documentary immerses audiences in the whirlwind chaos leading up to the festival including a biker gang; threat of cancellation; a mid-flight band rehearsal; and inexplicable luck culminating in Lennon shedding the mantle of The Beatles, and nervously taking the stage with Yoko Ono, Eric Clapton, Klaus Voormann, and Alan White; an unforgettable event that triggered Lennon’s decision to leave the Beatles forever.

Tár (Premieres September 15)

Cate Blanchett stars as the iconic musician Lydia Tár. The film, set in the international world of classical music, centres on Tár, who is widely considered one of the greatest living composer/conductors and first-ever female chief conductor of a major German orchestra. The film examines the changing nature of power, its impact and durability in our modern world.

I Have Nothing (Premieres September 23)

The series follows Carolyn on a comical quest to choreograph the perfect, full-length pairs figure skating routine to Whitney Houston’s 1992 iconic hit song, “I Have Nothing.”

The Voice, Season 24 (Premieres September 26)

This season, the coach lineup of the show will feature some big changes, since Blake Shelton won’t be a coach in the show’s 12-year history. Taking his place is Reba McEntire who will hold down the country contingent.

Starstruck, Season 3 (Premieres September 28)

Still living in London and working at the local cinema, Jessie (Rose Matafeo) explores a new single life after parting ways with film star Tom (Nikesh Patel). Two years after the breakup, Jessie navigates the pressures of adulthood and is confronted with the consequences of her own choices as her friends move on to the next stages in their lives, while Jessie is left questioning what she is really looking for.

Shoresy, Season 2 (Premieres September 28)

Created by and starring Jared Keeso, directed by Jacob Tierney and produced by New Metric Media in association with Play Fun Games, the half hour comedy sees the foul-mouthed, chirp-serving, mother-loving, fan favourite character, Shoresy (Keeso), and the Sudbury Blueberry Bulldogs of the Northern Ontario Senior Hockey Organization (The NOSHO), continue their quest to never lose again.

John Wick: Chapter 4 (Premieres September 29)

With the price on his head ever increasing, legendary hit man John Wick (Keanu Reeves) takes his fight against the High Table global as he seeks out the most powerful players in the underworld, from New York to Paris to Japan to Berlin.

The Little Mermaid (Premieres September 6)

Visionary filmmaker Rob Marshall’s live-action reimagining of the studio’s Oscar®-winning animated musical classic. The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.

I Am Groot, Season 2 (Premieres September 6)

The troublemaking twig returns to mischief in the second season of “I Am Groot.” This time, Baby Groot finds himself exploring the universe and beyond aboard the Guardians’ spaceships, coming face-to-face—or nose-to-nose—with new and colourful creatures and environments. Vin Diesel is back as the voice of Groot in five all-new shorts.

The Other Black Girl (Premieres September 13)

Nella, an editorial assistant, is tired of being the only Black girl at her company, so she’s excited when Hazel is hired. But as Hazel’s star begins to rise, Nella spirals out and discovers something sinister is going on at the company.

Marvel Studios Assembled: The Making of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (Premieres September 13)

Assembled is a comprehensive documentary series of specials goes behind-the-scenes of the shows and movies of the MCU, following the filmmakers, cast and crew, and Marvel heroes every step of the way. The series takes us behind the scenes with the cast and creative team who brought the movie to life. Combining immersive footage with candid interviews, this episode of Assembled reveals how an incredible new world was brought to life on the big screen.

Animals Up Close with Bertie Gregory (Premieres September 13)

In the new National Geographic series “Animals Up Close With Bertie Gregory,” the filmmaker embarks on a set of adventures to capture wildlife behaviours like never before. Armed with drones, state-of-the-art gimbal-mounted cameras and underwater tech, Bertie follows individual animals for weeks at a time, building up an intimate picture of their daily battles. He and his team travel to the most spectacular corners of our planet—Antarctica, the Galapagos Islands, Botswana, Patagonia, Indonesia, and the Central African Republic—to take viewers deep into the natural world and showcase extraordinary animal lives.

Theater Camp (Premieres September 14)

Eccentric staff members of an upstate New York theatre camp must band together when their beloved founder falls into a coma.

No One Will Save You (Premieres September 22)

No One Will Save You introduces Brynn Adams (Kaitlyn Dever), a creative and talented young woman who’s been alienated from her community. Lonely but ever hopeful, Brynn finds solace within the walls of the home where she grew up—until she’s awakened one night by strange noises from decidedly unearthly intruders. What follows is an action-packed face-off between Brynn and a host of extraterrestrial beings who threaten her future while forcing her to deal with her past.

The Kardashians, Season 4 (Premieres September 28)

The cameras are back with all access to the personal and private lives of Kris, Kourtney, Kim, Khloé, Kendall and Kylie. From second chances and new beginnings to unexpected blessings, they continue to bare it all together, a reminder that the most beautiful part of life is family.

Sitting in Bars with Cake (Premieres September 8)

Sanctuary (Premieres September 9)

In the wake of inheriting his father's hotel chain, Hal attempts to end his long and secret relationship with Rebecca. A Million Miles Away (Premieres September 15)

Follows Jose Hernandez, the first migrant farmworker to travel to space. A tale of perseverance, community and sacrifice to accomplish an impossible dream.

Wilderness (Premieres September 15)

Wilderness features British couple Liv (Jenna Coleman) and Will (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) who seem to have it all: a rock-solid marriage; a glamorous new life in New York thousands of miles from their provincial hometown; and still young enough to feel that their whole lives are ahead of them. Until Liv learns about Will’s affair. Heartbreak is swiftly followed by another emotion: fury. Revenge is her only option, and when Will proposes a trip around America’s epic National Parks to give their relationship a fresh start, Liv knows just how to get it... Wilderness is a twisted love story, where a dream holiday and a supposedly “happily-ever-after” quickly turns into a living nightmare.

Follows the true story of Cassandro, the ''exotico'' character created by Saúl Armendáriz, gay amateur wrestler from El Paso who rose to international stardom.

The Continental: From the World of John Wick (Premieres September 22)

The three-part series will explore the origin behind the iconic hotel-for-assassins, which is the centerpiece of the John Wick universe. The show will be seen through the eyes of a young Winston Scott, as he’s dragged into the hellscape of 1970s New York City to face a past he thought he’d left behind. Winston charts a deadly course through the hotel’s mysterious underworld in a harrowing attempt to seize the hotel where he will eventually take his throne.

Gen V (Premieres September 29)

Set in the diabolical world of The Boys, Gen V takes place between seasons three and four and expands the universe to Godolkin University, the prestigious superhero-only college where students train to be the next generation of heroes—preferably with lucrative endorsements. You know what happens when supes go bad, but not all superheroes start out corrupt. Beyond the typical college chaos of finding oneself and partying, these kids are facing explosive situations … literally. As the students vie for popularity and good grades, it’s clear that the stakes are much higher when superpowers are involved. When the group of young supes discover that something bigger and sinister is going on at school, they're put to the test: will they be the heroes or the villains of their stories?
