Watch List: 35 Shows and Movies to Stream in July 2022

There are plenty of TV shows and movies coming to all our favourite streaming services in the coming month, including Stranger Things 4: Volume 2, The Gray Man, Persuasion, Canada’s Drag Race and Scarborough. Here’s what we’re recommending on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, CBC Gem, Crave, Disney+ and Netflix Canada in July 2022.

Don’t Make Me Go (Premieres July 15) 

When a single father (John Cho) to a teenage daughter learns that he has a fatal brain tumor, he takes her on a road trip to find the mother who abandoned her years before and to try to teach her everything she might need over the rest of her life.

Forever Summer: (Premieres June 15) 

Forever Summer: Hamptons is a coming-of-age docusoap, set against the idyllic backdrop of the Hamptons, about a group of college kids from widely different backgrounds, from wealthy New York City kids who descend for the summer to the humble townies. By day, they’re working at a seaside restaurant. By night, they are tearing up the town, testing friendships, and exploring love during the hottest days of the year. This group and their friends are chasing the perfect summer at a pivotal time in their lives, when carefree adolescence is about to end. Come September, the stakes and responsibilities will be high, but the summer is theirs for the taking.

Anything’s Possible (Premieres July 22) 

This delightfully modern Gen Z coming-of-age story follows Kelsa, a confident high school girl who is trans, as she navigates through senior year. When her classmate Khal gets a crush on her, he musters up the courage to ask her out, despite the drama he knows it could cause. What transpires is a romance that showcases the joy, tenderness and pain of young love.

Paper Girls (Premieres July 29) 

In the early morning hours after Halloween 1988, four paper girls—Erin, Mac, Tiffany, and KJ—are out on their delivery route when they become caught in the crossfire between warring time-travelers, changing the course of their lives forever. Transported into the future, these girls must figure out a way to get back home to the past, a journey that will bring them face-to-face with the grown-up versions of themselves. While reconciling that their futures are far different than their 12-year-old selves imagined, they are being hunted by a militant faction of time-travelers known as the Old Watch, who have outlawed time travel so that they can stay in power. In order to survive, the girls will need to overcome their differences and learn to trust each other, and themselves.

Black Bird (Premieres July 8) 

Starring Taron Egerton, Paul Walter Hauser, Sepideh Moafi, Greg Kinnear and Ray Liotta, Black Bird is a six-episode psychological thriller inspired by actual events. When high school football hero and decorated policeman’s son, Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton) is sentenced to 10 years in a minimum security prison, he is given the choice of a lifetime - enter a maximum-security prison for the criminally insane and befriend suspected serial killer Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser), or stay where he is and serve his full sentence with no possibility of parole. Keene quickly realizes his only way out is to elicit a confession and find out where the bodies of several young girls are buried before Hall’s appeal goes through. But is this suspected killer telling the truth? Or is it just another tale from a serial liar? This dramatic and captivating story subverts the crime genre by enlisting the help of the very people put behind bars to solve its mysteries.

Surface (Premieres July 29) 

Set in high-end San Francisco, Surface stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw (The Morning Show) as Sophie, a woman who has suffered a traumatic head injury that has left her with extreme memory loss, believed to be a result of a suicide attempt. As Sophie embarks on a quest to put the pieces of her life back together with the help of her husband and friends, she begins to question whether or not the truth she is told is in fact the truth she has lived. Through twists and turns and an unexpected love triangle, this sexy, elevated thriller asks: What if you woke up one day and didn’t know your own secrets? Surface is a story of self- discovery which contemplates if we are pre-programmed to become who we are, or if we choose our own identity.

Falls Around Her (Premieres July 2)

Tantoo Cardinal shines as a world-famous Anishinaabe musician who returns to the reserve to rest and recharge—only to discover that fame (and the outside world) are not easily left behind, in writer-director Darlene Naponse's riveting portrait of resilience set among a northern First Nation.

A Brother’s Love (Premieres July 8)

After failing to secure a faculty position in the Philosophy department, 35-year old Sophia (Anne-Elisabeth Bossé, Heartbeats) is forced to “temporarily” move in with her older brother Karim (Patrick Hivon, Ravenous). Given their close relationship, he’s more than happy to share his place with his little sister. Their unbreakable bond will be put to the test when, for the first time in his life, Karim falls head over heels in love. Feeling abandoned, Sophia is forced to question her real purpose in life and make choices that will allow her to finally become an adult.

The Great British Baking Show, Season 12 (Premieres July 10)

Twelve new bakers make their way into a brand new bubble as The Great British Baking Show pitches the UK’s most famous tent in the grounds of Down Hall once again. Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas return to lead the latest batch of bakers through thirty brand new challenges set by Judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.

Race Against The Tide, Season 2 (Premieres July 10)

New Brunswick-based, award-winning Hip Hop artist Maestro Fresh Wes hosts the new season of Race Against The Tide, featuring a new group of sand sculptors who will compete head-to-head at the Bay of Fundy to create extraordinary sand art before the world’s highest tide comes in, while attempting to avoid elimination. Each week, the artists have six hours to create their sand sculptures before the tide washes them away. In the end, the two judges—five-time World Champion Karen Fralich and Master Sculptor Rusty Croft—will decide which duo will walk away with the grand prize of $10,000.

Skymed (Premieres July 10)

Life, death, and drama at 20,000 feet, Skymed is a drama wrapped in high-stakes medical adventure. The series weaves compelling stories around a diverse ensemble of young First Responders in the remote North, where help—and survival—are literally thousands of miles away. Over the course of the season, the trials, triumphs, hookups and heartbreaks of a perilous job in an unforgiving setting will challenge each of them to face their fears and grow up. This hour-long drama from creator Julie Puckrin (X Company, Transplant, Nurses, Killjoys, Mad Men), features an ensemble cast including Natasha Calis (Nurses), Morgan Holmstrom (Siberia), Ace (Aason) Nadjiwon (Batwoman), Praneet Akilla (Nancy Drew), Mercedes Morris (Between), Thomas Elms (The Order), Kheon Clarke (Riverdale) and Rebecca Kwan (Taken).

Akilla’s Escape (Premieres July 23)

When a routine deal goes bad, a drug trader (Saul Williams) tries to set things right while unexpected circumstances force him to confront his traumatic origins.

Scarborough (Premieres July 1)

Winner of eight Canadian Screen Awards including Best Motion Picture, and an official selection of the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival, Scarborough is an unflinching portrait of three, low-income families struggling to endure within a system that has set them up for failure. Adapted from the critically acclaimed novel by Catherine Hernandez, it shows the love and perseverance communities can foster, lifting up families to overcome the obstacles placed in their way.

Friday Night Lights, Seasons 1-5 (Premieres July 1) 

In the rural town of Dillon, Texas, winning the state football championship is prized above all else. Coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler) guides a high school football team through pressure-filled seasons while dealing with struggles relating to his own family. The interactions between the team members, current and former players, supporters, coaching staff and regular townsfolk address many of the issues facing small-town America.

No Time to Die (Premieres July 1)

James Bond is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica after leaving active service. However, his peace is short-lived as his old CIA friend, Felix Leiter, shows up and asks for help. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond on the trailof a mysterious villain who's armed with a dangerous new technology.

West Side Story (Premieres July 8)

Love at first sight strikes when young Tony spots Maria at a high school dance in 1957 New York City. Their burgeoning romance helps to fuel the fire between the warring Jets and Sharks, two rival gangs vying for control of the streets.

Canada’s Drag Race (Premieres July 14)

Welcome back to the mother-pucking runway! Repping Canada from coast-to-coast-to-coast, and featuring the first-ever competitors from Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador, the award-winning Crave Original series returns for its nine-episode, third season. Returning to preside over the queens this season are the Queen of the North herself, Brooke Lynn Hytes, who also hosts the Crave Original series 1 Queen 5 Queers; celebrity stylist and TV personality Brad Goreski; and ETALK senior correspondent Traci Melchor.

FBoy Island, Season 2 (Premieres July 14)

Filmed earlier this year in Cabo San Lucas and hosted by comedian and actress Nikki Glaser, Season 2 of FBoy Island follows three new women, Mia Emani Jones, Louise Barnard, and Tamaris Sepulveda, who move to the tropical paradise, and are joined by 26 men—13 self-proclaimed “Nice Guys” looking for love, and 13 self-proclaimed “FBoys,” there to compete for cold, hard cash. The women navigate the dating pool together with the hope of finding a lasting love connection. By the finale, all will be revealed: who is a Nice Guy, who is an FBoy, who the women ultimately choose, and who walks away with the prize money.

Love Island USA, Season 4 (Premieres July 19)

The matchmaking begins as a group of single “Islanders” come together in a stunning villa, ready to embark on a summer of dating, romance, and ultimately, relationships. Every few days the Islanders pair up and those who are not coupled are at risk of being dumped from the island. In addition to choosing their partners wisely, Islanders must also win the hearts of viewers who have the opportunity to shape events on screen, and ultimately crown one lucky couple the winner who will then have the chance to walk away with both love, and the cash prize.

Rap Sh!t (Premieres July 21)

A new comedy series from Emmy® and Golden Globe® nominee Issa Rae (Insecure), Rap Sh!t follows two estranged high school friends from Miami—Shawna (Aida Osman) and Mia (KaMillion)— who reunite to form a rap group.

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin (Premieres July 28)

Twenty years ago, a series of tragic events almost ripped the blue-collar town of Millwood apart. Now, in the present day, a group of disparate teen girls find themselves tormented by an unknown Assailant, and made to pay for the secret sin their parents committed two decades ago...as well as their own. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin takes audiences miles away from Rosewood, featured in the original series, to a brand new town, with a new generation of “Little Liars.”

Rupaul’s Drag Race: Down Under (Premieres July 30)

Hosted by RuPaul, the best and brightest Aussie and Kiwi queens strut their stuff in a variety of challenges to prove they’ve got what it takes to be Down Under’s next Drag Queen Superstar!

National Geographic’s SharkFest (Premieres July) 

National Geographic’s shark-focused programming turns 10 this year, and to celebrate the network will be running 30 hours of new specials and 60 hours of “enhanced” content on its own channels as well as ABC, Hulu and ESPN (???). And, all of this content will be streaming on Disney+. Expect deep dives into different shark species, sharks that eat everything, baby sharks and a Chris Hemsworth-hosted special about how humans and sharks can coexist.
