Watch List: 50+ Shows and Movies to Stream in August 2023

Before we get into recommendations, a quick note about the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes: while it may feel odd to be promoting the newest shows and films to hit our streaming platforms while these creators are striking, WGA and SAG-AFTRA member Franchesca Ramsey points out that continuing to watch this content shows that their work is valuable and should be compensated properly. So with that in mind, here are Friday Things’ top picks this month, including the premiere of Painkiller, the Crave drama Armageddon Time, the first season of Ahsoka and CBC’s newest film You & Me. Let this watch list be a to-do list for supporting both unions, and read on for the full list of what we’re recommending on Apple TV+, CBC Gem, Crave, Disney+, Hayu, Netflix Canada and Prime Video in August 2023.

Strange Planet (Premieres August 9)

Invasion, Season 2 (Premieres August 23)

From Academy Award-nominated and two-time Emmy Award-nominated producer Simon Kinberg and David Weil, Invasion is a sweeping, character-driven science fiction drama series that follows an alien invasion through different perspectives around the world. Set across multiple continents, “Invasion” stars Shamier Anderson, Golshifteh Farahani, Sam Neill, Firas Nassar and Shioli Kutsuna.

Wanted: The Escape of Carlos Ghosn (Premieres August 25)

The riveting story of CEO-turned-fugitive Carlos Ghosn, including his reign of power, shocking arrest and calculated getaway that stunned the world.

Dreaming Whilst Black (Premieres August 1)

Loosely inspired by real events, it tells the story of Kwabena (series creator and BAFTA Award-winner Adjani Salmon), a Black British 28-year-old in London who quits his dead-end recruitment job to pursue his dream of becoming a filmmaker. However, he quickly faces the hardships of his decision to try to balance financial security, love life, family pressures, and his sense of reality while trying to navigate his way through an impermeable industry. Despite these adversities, Kwabena remains determined to chase his dreams.

FREEUP! Emancipation Day 2023 (Premieres August 1)

In this year’s edition, FREEUP! Emancipation Day 2023 goes all out to immerse audiences in the essence of Emancipation Day. Expect a spotlight on captivating stories, and dive into history through performances by Dijah SB, Adinkra Farm Ensemble, Kaia Kater and James Baley; and sharp insights and historical gems. Chateau DIY, Season 6 (Premieres August 4)

The spinoff series of the primetime hit Escape to the Chateau follows the stories of various British families making the monumental decision to leave home and chase the French dream. But life in an elegant chateau can have its downsides. There is the language barrier, meanwhile everything seems to be expensive, from water bills to astronomical heating costs, not to mention the long and sometimes lonely winters. To put it bluntly, maintaining a building that's falling apart at the seams is not for the faint-hearted.

Richard III (Premieres August 5)

His succession plan will slay you. Charismatic, cunning and utterly ruthless, Richard, Duke of Gloucester (Colm Feore), is the very embodiment of lethal ambition as he maneuvers and murders his way to the throne of England. But once he reaches the top, the only way is down and in Richard’s growing roster of vengeful enemies, none are more menacing than the ghosts of his past.

The Colour of Ink (Premieres August 9)

Ink is our primal medium. It has always been with us, inscribing the evolution of humanity. The Colour of Ink uncovers the medium’s mystery and power through the eyes of Jason Logan, a visionary Toronto inkmaker. Working with ingredients foraged in the wild—weeds, berries, bark, flowers, rocks, rust—he makes ink from just about anything. Jason sends custom-made inks to an eclectic range of artists around the world, from a New Yorker cartoonist to a Japanese calligrapher. As the inks take on a life of their own, his playful alchemy paints a story of colour that reconnects us to the earth and returns us to a childlike sense of wonder.

You & Me (Premieres August 11)

When happy-go-lucky journalist Ben met Jess, it was love at first sight. Things moved fast: they moved in together, got pregnant—a whirlwind romance. But then tragedy struck and Ben struggled to move on. While his mother Linda and boss Dee are unable to shake him out of his funk, an interview for one of his columns brings Ben into the orbit of aspiring actress Emma and a new hope. A chance meeting in their local park allows Ben and Emma to get closer and reveals they share transformative experiences of grief. As their relationship grows, Ben finds himself torn between this new romance and his sworn duty as a father, while Emma is harbouring a secret that could jeopardize everything.

Coextinction (Premieres August 16)

After a mother orca carries her dead calf for 17 days, two filmmakers spring into action, joining Indigenous leaders and scientists making a final attempt to save the last 74 Southern Resident orcas from extinction. Moving beyond a traditional wildlife documentary, Coextinction takes audiences deep into the oceans and forests of the Pacific Northwest to witness the complex systems of interconnectedness linking together ecosystem collapse, centuries of injustice against Indigenous peoples, and the frontlines of the world’s most pressing environmental threats. No species goes extinct in isolation.

A Body That Works (Premieres August 25)

One woman longs to be a mother, but she can’t carry a pregnancy to full term. Another woman, in desperate financial need, is able to grant the gift of life on the other’s behalf. Their hopelessness unites them, but their transaction is far from simple. One woman gives up her dream of carrying her own child, while the other gives up control over her body for nine months. A Body That Works is a story about relationships where love, jealousy, desire, and generosity intersect. It’s an examination of a powerful bond between two women—one that neither of them ever wanted.

After a catastrophic crash on an unknown planet, pilot Mills (Driver) quickly discovers he’s actually stranded on Earth…65 million years ago. The Chi, Season 6 (Premieres August 4)

On Chicago’s south side, an average day finds kids prepping for school as their parents head off to work; young adults trying to make a living; and the elders keeping an eye on things from their front porches. But in this tough neighborhood, real dangers threaten daily to squelch dreams, and the simplest decisions can have life or death consequences.

Winning Time: The Rise of The Lakers Dynasty, Season 2 (Premieres August 6)

Winning Time: The Rise of The Lakers Dynasty is a fast-break series about the professional and personal lives of the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers, one of sports’ most revered and dominant dynasties; a team that defined an era, both on and off the court. Season 2 hones in on the period just after the Finals in 1980 through 1984, culminating in the first professional rematch of the era’s greatest stars: Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.The ensemble cast includes: John C. Reilly, Jason Clarke, Adrien Brody, Quincy Isaiah, Sally Field, and Jason Segel, among many others.

Fantastic Friends, Season 2 (Premieres August 9)

Hosted by James and Oliver Phelps, aka, the mischievous twins in the Harry Potter franchise, Fantastic Friends is part adventure-travel series; part magic-infused challenge show; and part celebration of friendship. Each episode sees the Phelps twins travel to a destination to meet up with one of their famous friends, who then take on the role of tour guide.

Rap Sh!t, Season 2 (Premieres August 10)

From Issa Rae, the Max original comedy series, Rap Sh!t follows two estranged high school friends from Miami, Shawna and Mia, who reunite to form a rap group. In their rise to fame, Shawna and Mia find themselves at a pivotal moment in their rap career as they are forced to decide if they will stay true to themselves, or conform to the demands of the music industry.

Alice, Darling (Premieres August 11)

In the taut thriller Alice, Darling, Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick stars as a woman pushed to the breaking point by her psychologically abusive boyfriend, Simon. While on vacation with two close girlfriends, Alice rediscovers the essence of herself and gains some much-needed perspective. Slowly, she starts to fray the cords of codependency that bind her. But Simon’s vengeance is as inevitable as it is shattering – and, once unleahsed, it tests Alice’s strength, her courage, and the bonds of her deep-rooted friendships.

Billions, Season 7 (Premieres August 11)

In the final season of Billions, alliances are turned on their heads. Old wounds are weaponized. Loyalties are tested. Betrayal takes on epic proportions. Enemies become wary friends. And Bobby Axelrod returns, as the stakes grow from Wall Street to the world.

Armageddon Time (Premieres August 18)

From acclaimed filmmaker James Gray, Armageddon Time is a deeply personal coming-of-age story about the strength of family and the generational pursuit of the American Dream.

Pillow Talk, Season 2 (Premieres August 18)

Returning for a second season, the Crave original series, Pillow Talk is a 10-episode comedy series that follows the hilarity and drama experienced by four diverse couples and a pair of roommates, all in the intimacy of their bedrooms.

Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 3 (Premieres August 2)

Still reeling from the loss of Gamora, Peter Quill must rally his team to defend the universe and protect one of their own. If the mission is not completely successful, it could possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.

The Randall Scandal: Love, Loathing and Vanderpump (Premieres August 4)

You've heard all about #Scandoval, but the most explosive scandal raging behind the scenes of "Vanderpump Rules" is The Randall Scandal. This documentary charts the unbelievable tale of B-movie mogul Randall Emmett who rose to fame on the heels of his engagement to Bravo megastar Lala Kent. When their relationship publicly collapses and a bitter custody dispute ensues, Randall is caught up in a swarm of bombshell allegations and lawsuits that rock Hollywood and the Bravo-verse.

Only Murders in the Building, Season 3 (Premieres August 8)

Season three finds Charles, Oliver and Mabel (played by Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez) investigating a murder behind the scenes of a Broadway show. Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd) is a Hollywood action star whose Broadway debut is cut short by his untimely death. Aided by co-star Loretta Durkin (Meryl Streep), our trio embarks on their toughest case yet, all while director Oliver desperately attempts to put his show back together. Curtains up!

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, Season 4 (Premieres August 9)

After an epic summer at Camp Shallow Lake, the Wildcats return to East High where they prepare a stage production of “High School Musical 3: Senior Year.” But plans are disrupted when Principal Gutierrez announces that Disney has decided to make the long-awaited “High School Musical 4: The Reunion” movie on location at their beloved high school.

Jagged Mind (Premieres August 11)

When Billie finds herself reliving different versions of the same first date, she must break out of a series of loops created by her manipulative ex-girlfriend.

Star Wars: Ahsoka (Premieres August 23)

After the fall of the Galactic Empire, former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.

Vacation Friends 2 (Premieres August 25)

Picking up a few months after the end of Vacation Friends, this uproarious sequel finds newly married couple Marcus (Howery) and Emily (Orji) inviting their uninhibited besties Ron (Cena) and Kyla (Hagner), who are also newly married and have a baby, to join them for a vacation when Marcus lands an all-expenses-paid trip to a Caribbean resort. His reason for traveling there in the first place is to meet with the owners of the resort to bid on a construction contract for a hotel they own in Chicago. But when Kyla’s incarcerated father Reese (Buscemi) is released from San Quentin and shows up at the resort unannounced at the worst possible moment, things get out of control, upending Marcus’ best laid plans and turning the vacation friends’ perfect trip into total chaos.

Justified: City Primeval (Premieres August 30)

Justified: City Primeval sees Timothy Olyphant return to play Raylan Givens, a U.S. marshal from Kentucky. It is set in Detroit and chronicles the relationship between Raylan and his teenage daughter Willa Givens, played by Olyphant’s real-life daughter, Vivian, 20.

NCT-127: The Lost Boys (Premieres August 30)

This new four-part documentary series follows the K-pop boyband as they “take time to pause and reflect on their success”. The Korean pop band features nine members, Taeil, Johnny, Taeyong, Yuta, Doyoung, Jaehyun, Jungwoo, Mark and Haechan, who will open up about their childhoods and feelings about their international success over the course of the series.

Reservation Dogs, Season 3 (Premieres August 30)

From Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, Reservation Dogs is a half-hour comedy that follows the exploits of four Indigenous teenagers from rural Oklahoma. This season, the Rez Dogs find themselves stranded in Cali and have to figure out their way back home. Season three is full of road trips, bathroom wisdom, unexpected fathers, boarding schools, Bigfoot, rumours, revenge and healing.

Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop (Premieres August 9)

This timely limited doc series recontextualizes the role the irrepressible women of hip hop played throughout the revolutionary genre’s 50 years by reinserting them into the canon where they belong: at the center, from day one to present day. 

Painkiller (Premieres August 10)

A fictionalized retelling of events, Painkiller is a scripted limited series that explores some of the origins and aftermath of the opioid crisis in America, highlighting the stories of the perpetrators, victims, and truth-seekers whose lives are forever altered by the invention of OxyContin. An examination of crime, accountability, and the systems that have repeatedly failed hundreds of thousands of Americans, Painkiller is based on the book Pain Killer by Barry Meier and the New Yorker Magazine article ‘The Family That Built the Empire of Pain’ by Patrick Radden Keefe.

Heart of Stone (Premieres August 11)

Rachel Stone (Gal Gadot) appears to be an inexperienced tech, on an elite MI6 unit headed up by lead agent Parker (Jamie Dornan). What her MI6 team doesn't know is that Stone actually works for the Charter — a covert peacekeeping organization, secret even from other spies, which uses cutting-edge technology to neutralize global threats. Rachel has been trained to be the consummate professional: a phenomenal field agent who sticks to the mission, follows the numbers, and trusts no one. When a routine mission is derailed by mysterious hacker Keya Dhawan (Alia Bhatt), Rachel’s two lives collide. Jared Freid: 37 and Single (Premieres August 15)

Introducing Jared Freid's hilarious stand-up comedy special, "37 & Single". In this uproarious performance, Jared, a self-proclaimed expert on the single life, takes us on a wild ride through the ups and downs of navigating the modern dating world. With a humorously annoyed perspective, he hilariously tackles the frustrations of apps, awkward set-ups, and the constant reminders from friends who have moved into the next phase of life. Join Jared as he explores the nuances of being single, growing up, gender reveal parties, and the inevitable break-ups that occur along the way. Get ready for a night of laughter and relatable stories as Jared sheds light on the joys and challenges of being 37 and still searching for that special someone.

Untold: Hall of Shame (Premieres August 15)

Victor Conte's name is synonymous with the biggest doping scandal ever to rock the sports community, ensnaring top athletes such as baseball great Barry Bonds and track-and-field legends Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery. For 16 years, Conte swears BALCO Laboratories, his supplement and nutrition company based in the Bay Area, never dabbled in illegal, performance-enhancing drugs. But by 2000, he went to the dark side and became the go-to guy for athletes in search of steroids, fame, and world records. The film features interviews with several of Conte’s notable former associates – including Montgomery  and the anti-doping and IRS authorities who helped send him to prison after a 42-count indictment – give harrowing testimony as the legend of one of sports’ most notorious names continues to unfold.

At Home with The Fury’s (Premieres August 16)

Undefeated heavyweight champion Tyson Fury retires from boxing to embrace the eccentricities of family life in this hilarious and heartfelt docusoap.

Depp V Heard (Premieres August 16)

Depp v Heard is a three-part series examining the infamous defamation case that captured the world’s attention and became the world's first trial by TikTok. Showing both testimonies side-by-side for the first time, this series explores this global media event, questioning the nature of truth and the role it plays in our modern society.

The Upshaws, Part 4 (Premieres August 17)

A working-class Black family in Indiana strives for a better life and a happy home while juggling everyday struggles in this comedy series.

Untold: Swamp Kings (Premieres August 22)

College football is life in Florida, nowhere more apparent than in the extraordinary story of the Florida Gators from 2005 to 2010. After a blazing run in the 1990s under Coach Steve Spurrier, the University of Florida’s winning streak had dried up by 2005. Enter Urban Meyer, the Gators’ demanding new head coach whose take-no-prisoners style breeds not only a string of legendary victories, but also unrelenting drama that rippled well beyond the locker room. In their own words through extensive sit-down interviews paired with archival footage, Meyer and the titans he coached (Brandon Siler, Tim Tebow, Brandon Spikes, Major Wright, and Ahmad Black, among many others) give viewers a bird’s-eye view of how they catapulted the Florida Gators from underdogs to winners of two BCS National Championships.

The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On, Season 2 (Premieres August 23)

Five different couples, on the verge of marriage. One partner is ready to get married, the other isn’t quite as sure. An ultimatum is issued - and in just over eight weeks, they must commit to marriage, or move on.  In the meantime, each will choose a new potential partner from one of the other couples, in a life-changing opportunity to get a glimpse of two different possible futures.

You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah (Premieres August 25 )

Lifelong best friends Stacy (Sunny Sandler) and Lydia (Samantha Lorraine) have long dreamt of epic bat mitzvahs but when popular boy Andy Goldfarb (Dylan Hoffman) and Hebrew school drama come between them, their perfect plans go comically awry. Directed by Sammi Cohen, produced by Happy Madison and Alloy Entertainment, and also starring Idina Menzel, Sadie Sandler, Sarah Sherman, Luis Guzmán, and Jackie & Adam Sandler, You are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah chronicles the high comedy and modern teen angst that comes with family, friendship, and first crushes.

The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart (Premieres August 4)

When Alice, aged 9, tragically loses her parents in a mysterious fire, she is taken to live with her grandmother June at Thornfield flower farm, where she learns that there are secrets within secrets about her and her family’s past. Set against Australia’s breathtaking, natural landscape, and with native wildflowers and plants providing a way to express the inexpressible, this enthralling family drama spans decades. Alice's journey as she grows from her complicated past builds to an emotional climax when she finds herself fighting for her life against a man she loves.

The Killing Vote (Premieres August 10)

This Korean thriller follows a mysterious figure known as Gaetal, who conducts surveys via text message to decide whether to put certain vicious criminals to death, then murders them based on the results.

Red, White & Royal Blue (Premieres August 11)

Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), the son of the first woman President of the United States (Uma Thurman), and Britain’s Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine) have a lot in common: stunning good looks, undeniable charisma, international popularity…and a total disdain for each other. Separated by an ocean, their long-running feud hasn’t really been an issue, until a disastrous—and very public—altercation at a royal event becomes tabloid fodder driving a potential wedge in U.S./British relations at the worst possible time. Going into damage control mode, their powerful families and respective handlers force the two rivals into a staged “truce.” But as Alex and Henry’s icy relationship unexpectedly begins to thaw into a tentative friendship, the friction that existed between them sparks something deeper than they ever expected.

Moving On (Premieres August 14)

Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin star as estranged friends who reunite to seek revenge on the petulant widower (Malcolm McDowell) of their recently deceased best friend. Along the way, Fonda's character reunites with her great love (Richard Roundtree) as each woman learns to make peace with the past and each other.

Three Mother, Two Babies and a Scandal (Premieres August 16)

Unpack the extraordinary story of the first major scandal of the internet age. Famously dubbed the "cash for babies" scandal by the tabloid press, follow Welsh couple Judith and Alan Kilshaw who paid $12,000 to adopt two baby twins from America, which causes world-wide outrage.

Shelter (Premieres August 18)

The series follows the story of Mickey Bolitar after the sudden death of his father leads him to start a new life in Kasselton, New Jersey.
